Argentinian company INVAP has been developing and producing radars and satellites for 20 years since it initially developed the SAOCOM low Earth orbit (LEO) observation satellite for the Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE): Argentina's space agency. Speaking to Janes, the company's radar project manager, Dario Giussi, said that a second satellite of this type was launched at the end of August 2020 and includes an L-Band synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Following on from the CONAE satellite programme, INVAP has developed radars for air traffic control, Doppler weather monitoring, and surveillance and control of airspace for the Argentine Air Force (AAF). "Currently we are working on the second series of the RPA [Radar Primario Argen-tino: a radar system being produced for the AAF]. The programme was started in 2008 and the technological evolution of the original 3D active phased-array RPA includes digital beamforming and up-to-date semiconductor technologies such as gallium nitride," Giussi explained. He noted the company is also developing and manufacturing an evolved RPA for the AAF, in fixed and mobile versions, to cover the country's entire airspace (the mobile version - the RPA-170M - has a range of 170 miles as opposed to the 200-mile range of the original RPA).
