The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on 18 June that it will use Lockheed Martin AN/ SPY-7 solid-state radars (SSRs) on the two Aegis-equipped ships it plans to build for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) to replace the Aegis Ashore systems it cancelled last year. The MoD said during a press briefing that it also plans to equip the ships with the Aegis Baseline J7 ballistic missile defence (BMD)-capable weapon system. Both systems had initially been contracted for two land-based Aegis Ashore systems.
