The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has announced plans to buy a new short-range air defence (SHORAD) system. The RTAF's Directorate of Operations said in a recent 'median price notice' that the acquisition of a single system will receive funding of THB940 million (USD28.5 million), with the new capability set to be installed at an unspecified RTAF airbase. The notice indicated that the service plans to procure the new system through one of three local importers, all of which have provided price quotations. The local firms include United Defense Technology (UTC), Datagate, and Chankasem International. In the past UTC has been linked with procurements from France, Datagate has supported procurement programmes from Russia and Europe, while Chankasem International has supported defence procurements from China, including the recently delivered VN-16 amphibious assault vehicles.
