The UN-registered Syrian-American Medical Society hospital in the opposition-held town of Al-Atareb was targeted by precise artillery shelling from Syrian government-held positions on 21 March. Imagery later published to social media showed exploded ordnance fragments indicating that it is highly likely that Russian-made 152 mm Krasnopol laser-guided munitions were used in this attack. Designed to be fired from conventional 152 mm howitzers, these projectiles were known to have been used by Russian forces and Russian-backed mercenaries in Syria, although were not, until now, believed by Janes to have been in use with Syrian government forces or to have been used by Russian forces against civilian targets.
