The US Navy (USN) conducted successful test flights of two Lockheed Martin Trident Ⅱ D5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) on 22 February. The two launches bring the number of successful flights conducted since design completion in 1989 to a total of 155, a 25-year-plus reliability record that the company says is unmatched by any other large ballistic missile. Both missiles had been converted into test configurations using kits that contain range safety devices and flight telemetry instrumentation. Launched from a submerged Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine in the Pacific Ocean, these were the latest in a continuing series of operational system evaluation tests of the Trident system being carried out under testing guidelines created by the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
