The US Navy (USN) had high hopes for its DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class surface combat ships, planning to buy upward of 32 hulls outfitted with the latest advances in technology. This included an automated fire suppression system, a new gun design, an advanced radar, and a new ship computer operating system, wrapped up in a radical new hull and structural design. Over time, costs and shifting threat assessments saw numbers tumble until eventually the navy settled on building just three DDG 1000s and restarting its DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer production line. While some of the capabilities designed for the Zumwalt class will likely find a home on future vessels, one of its cornerstone technologies - the Advanced Gun System (AGS) and its heavily automated magazine - will be out of production before the first ship is commissioned.
