摘要

There is a growing sense among air operations planners that the unusually permissive air environments over Afghanistan and Iraq have fostered a potentially unrealistically high level of reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). During the last decade their potential has been exploited at every level, from the very tactical hand-thrown micro-UAVs up to persistent, strategic-level intelligence pseudo satellites that loiter on station for long periods. However, despite analysts and operators describing the air environment over Afghanistan and Iraq as 'benign', United States' figures from 2010 acknowledge the loss of 38 MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reapers in-theatre.
