The US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) announced the award of a USD185.4 million Phase II contract modification to Austal USA in November for a new class of Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) to meet the combined needs of the US Navy (USN), Marine Corps and Army, writes Richard Scott. The contract requires the detailed design and build of one JHSV, with options for the build of up to nine additional ships, plus associated shore-based spares. The potential value of the overall 10-ship project is more than USD1.6 billion. The JHSV programme is a joint service effort between the army and navy to acquire high-speed shallow draft vessels, leveraging commercial fast ferry technologies for fast intra-theatre transportation of troops, military vehicles and equipment. The US military currently leases two commercial high speed vessels each capable of achieving speeds of more than 30 kt.
