摘要

The US Navy plans to start deploying a new computer-based flight deck management system to its nuclear-powered aircraft carriers from 2009. Designed to replace the long-lived Ouija Board - a tabletop replica scale model of the aircraft carrier's flight and hangar decks used to track and spot aircraft on the carrier - the Block II variant of the Aviation Data Management and Control System (ADMACS) has been developed by Specialty Systems Inc (SSI) in conjunction with engineers at the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The legacy Ouija Board is used by launch and recovery officers to track and monitor all aircraft on the carrier. Information on deck aircraft, such as the type of weapons loaded and their fuel tank levels are documented on deck and hand-carried to board operators where the information is marked and displayed on transparent grease boards. Although this method has proved robust and reliable since its inception during the Second World War, it is labour-intensive and space consuming.
