The interest in revamping and simplifying aircraft carrier operations is partly due to uncertainty surrounding possible changes to the carrier's role in naval operations. In addition to the main threats to aircraft carriers and embarked Carrier Air Wings (CVWs), such as surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, anti-ship ballistic missiles, and adversary fighter aircraft, bombers, and tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aircraft carriers are faced with the challenge of adapting to the technological advances of future warfare. As anti-access/area denial (A2/ AD) capabilities proliferate, US aircraft carriers may also be faced with operating at increasing ranges and defending against emerging threats, such as unmanned underwater vehicles or flotillas of small, high-speed boats. Large-deck amphibious assault ships, such as the new America class or the next-generation amphibious ship replacement - LX(R) that is intended to replace the Harpers Ferry- and Whidbey Island-class landing ship dock (LSD) vessels, may also be called on to take a greater role in re-inventing what type of ships the US expects to take on tactical aircraft missions.
