摘要

Poland's accession to NATO membership in 1999 marked the beginning of a major period of transformation for the country's navy; a transition that is still in progress 17 years later. The evolution of Poland's navy from a Cold-War configuration to a NATO-compatible fleet has involved significant changes in structure and role - a process that has been facilitated by a gradual increase in participation in NATO-led exercises and operations. Poland's entrance into NATO also spurred a gradual modernisation of the country's armed forces to align old Soviet military equipment to NATO standards. For the navy, however, ongoing budget pressure means that progress has been painfully slow. As such, with the bulk of its fleet dating back to the 1980s and 1990s, and in danger of becoming unserviceable by the end of the decade, the rapid and urgent modernisation of vessels or their replacement remains the navy's biggest challenge.
