Northern waters are one of the main components of the growing great power naval rivalry in Europe today, and the Baltic Sea in particular is seeing a resurgence in naval presence and wider activity. While the operations of a number of navies in the Baltic are receiving notable attention, the Finnish Navy faces a strategic challenge of maintaining stable relations with Russia to the east while also working with its Western naval allies. "We are a small navy but powerful, and we show it." Talking to IHS Jane's, Captain Erkki Mikkola, the new commander of the Finnish Navy's coastal fleet, set out the navy's current and emerging requirements and strategy.
