The HDW Class 209 has established itself as the most successful conventionally-powered export submarine of the modern era. Evolved and improved over a 50-year period, the basic design has earned widespread recognition for its robust engineering, ease of maintenance, very low signature, good payload, extended submerged endurance, and excellent handling. As of 2016, more than 65 Class 209 variants have been ordered by 15 navies worldwide.
