Despite broad statements about increasing defence spending, there have been few firm details of US President-elect Donald Trump's plans for how to do this. Yet one notable assertion that emerged in his pre-election positions was a declared intention to acquire significantly more hulls for the US Navy (USN). Trump told a rally in Newtown, Pennsylvania, on 21 October, that "Our navy is the smallest it has been since World War Ⅰ. My plan will be to build 350 ships. We need a 350-ship navy." According to a statement published on the Trump website, he told the rally that delivering the plan would include investing in US craftsmen and US steel.
