Introduced into service from the mid-1990s, the French Navy's five La Fayette-class frigates broke the mould with their striking, sharply angled low radar cross-section (RCS) topside. This 'stealthy' design reflected the ships' role within the navy's surface fleet. More than a patrol corvette, but not a fully fledged 'high-end' warfighter, the Fregate La Fayette (FLF) ships were conceived to operate, often alone, in crisis management and peacekeeping missions and with particular emphasis on anti-surface operations. Tasks include presence, intelligence gathering, special forces support, protection of shipping, and carrier task group operations.
