Sitting alongside in Miami Beach port, Florida, in mid-April 2014, the US Coast Guard (USCG) Famous-class medium endurance cutter CGC Legare was showing off a haul of 3.5 tons of cocaine, captured during a seven-week Caribbean patrol. According to news reports, the 127 bales -with an estimated street value of USD3 50 million - were handed to federal agents for destruction. The haul was rounded up in separate operations. In one operation, Legare's helicopter disabled the engines of a suspected smuggling vessel whose crew had thrown USD90 million worth ofbales over the side. In another, bales valued at USD80 million were found floating after a USCG team from Legare, embarked in the Canadian Kingston-class mine warfare vessel Glace Bay, had boarded a fishing vessel about 100 miles south of Jamaica on 15 March 2014. Both operations typified how the combination of intelligence work conducted by the US-led Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF) South and hardware contributed by the participating nations could deliver effective outcomes at sea.
