The assurance of a proven design, coupled with the availability of pre-existing facilities for construction and maintenance, were key to Turkey's decision to downse-lect the SEDEF shipyard to meet its long-standing requirement for a landing platform dock (LPD) vessel, local defence industry sources have told IHS Jane's. The Executive Committee of Turkey's Defence Industries Undersecretariat (SSM) announced on 27 December 2013 that it would begin contract talks with SEDEF, which is offering a design developed with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia based on the Spanish Navy's landing helicopter dock (LHD) ship Juan Carlos I.
