In May 2013, mote than 6,500 service personnel, 35 ships, and three task forces took part in the 'international Mine Countermeasur.es Exercise 2013' ('IMCMEX 13'). Operating the length of the Gulf, through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Gulf of Oman, according to US Central Command (GENICOM) exercise activities included helicopters conducting more than 70 sorties, ships steaming further than 8,000 n miles, and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) searching more than 70 square n miles of water. Forty-one nations, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, France, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, participated in what was the largest exercise of its kind in the region for several years, as the international community practised detecting and clearing mines to ensure the security of this vital shipping route.
