摘要

Using commercial marine standards in surface warships brings potential benefits and disadvantages. Their use also raises fundamental questions about the differences between warship and commercial design drivers and why they result in such different solutions: What are the factors influencing current warship designers? Why are warships relatively so expensive? How can they be made more affordable? From the outset, it should be recognised that the growing trend towards applying commercial design approaches and standards in the United Kingdom, and more broadly in Western Europe, is a positive shift towards building more affordable warships. Indeed, the authors have direct experience within the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in introducing vessel designs that have adopted commercial features to varying degrees.
