A product of the 'Dreadnought Revolution' in engineering, Australia benefitted from the fitting of Parsons steam turbines for her main propulsion. Each of the two engine rooms, port and starboard, contained one set of turbines driving two shafts. The main condensers were isolated in separate compartments together with main circulating pumps, evaporators, steering engine, auxiliary condensers and various other machinery. The steam to drive the turbines came from Australia 's 31 Babcock boilers. The engineering layout was complicated by the unique turret and magazine arrangement, meaning that five separate boiler rooms were required.
