Three years ago the UK Royal Navy (RN) and wider maritime capability was hit hard by a series of measures in the then-new coalition government's Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). Overwhelmingly shaped by constricted public finances and continuing focus on operations in Afghanistan, SDSR 2010 reduced RN personnel levels, pared back amphibious lift, cut frigate numbers, and scrapped a new fleet of long-range maritime patrol aircraft before they entered service.
