In the last decade of the last century and in the first decade of the new millennium, as the world moved away from a Cold War-inspired strategic focus on Europe, analysts spoke of the twentieth century being the Atlantic century and the twenty-first century becoming the Pacific era. Certainly the anticipated, and now perhaps hurrying, strategic rise of China was the prime reason for analysts to suggest that an increasing focus east of the Malacca Straits would become essential for many.
