The first of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) two new Canberra-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) vessels began harbour-acceptance testing in October, officials confirmed recently. Speaking to IHS Jane's at the Pacific 2013 international maritime exhibition and conference in Sydney on 8 October, BAE Systems LHD integrated logistics support manager Wendy Bourke said lead ship Canberra would be moved from the shipbuilder's William-stown dockyard to the Port of Melbourne's Webb Dock during that week, where harbour trials would begin with vehicle loading/offloading tests. Following the completion of harbour trials, Canberra is scheduled to start sea trials in December. Under current plans, the ship will be delivered in May 2014. Delivery was originally scheduled for late February, but poor weather conditions in Melbourne resulted in programme slippage.
