With an eye on the ever-expanding and qualitatively improving Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, Japan has quietly pursued development of a new long-range, high-speed weapon in the shape of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' XASM-3 ramjet-powered anti-ship missile. Work is proceeding in partnership with the Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) of the Japan Defense Agency (JDA). Intended as a successor to the subsonic, turbojet-powered Type 93 (ASM-2), XASM-3 has an integrated solid propellant/ramjet motor and a range of at least 200 km. It reportedly includes a dual-mode imaging infrared and active radar terminal seeker.
