A modernisation programme for the Indian Navy's (IN's) Russian-built Sindhughosh-class (Project 877EKM/'Kilo') submarines is making greater use of components manufactured locally or sourced from Western suppliers to local specifications. Four of the 10 'Kilos' - which entered service between 1986 and 2000 - have been upgraded at the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Centre in Severodvinsk, northwest Russia, and work has been undertaken on other units elsewhere in both countries.
