Each of Australia's six Collins-class submarines spent between five and 12 months of the year to June 2010 in dock undergoing or awaiting repairs or maintenance, the service disclosed on 9 February, writes Julian Kerr. On average, the Collins fleet was seaworthy for only 32 per cent of Fiscal Year 2009-10 (FY09-10) because of faulty engines, broken generators, crew shortages and maintenance requirements. In the first half of FY09-10, just one submarine was available for the full period, with a second becoming seaworthy for the last two months, according to navy data supplied to federal opposition defence spokesman David Johnstone.
