Russia's acquisition of French Mistral-class amphibious assault ships was necessary because the development of an indigenous solution would have "taken at least 10 years", according to the chief of the Russian general staff. General Nikolai Makarov added in comments reported by state information service RIA Novosti on 11 February that Russia should pursue a strategy of acquiring the best modern weaponry abroad with a view to local construction.
