During the Cold War the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) had up to 50 fast patrol boats in its inventory; soon they will be replaced by six stealthy Skjold-class fast attack craft (FACs) as the navy - for the second time in its history - is rebuilt almost from the ground up.rnWhen it was created in the 1960s with financial assistance from the United States, the RNoN was designed to defend the Norwegian coastline from attack by Warsaw Pact forces. Operations close to shore, ducking in and out of cover and engaging the enemy at short range, were what the fleet of fast patrol craft and their crews excelled at, backed up by a network of coastal artillery.
