Raytheon's AN/SLQ-32 shipboard EW suite is the US Navy's principal form of electronic alert against anti-ship missiles, entering service in the late 1970s as a passive threat warning receiver and undergoing incremental improvements that included the addition of active radar-jamming capabilities, writes Jon Rosamond.rnHowever, the 'Slick 32' was designed to provide an EW detection and coun-termeasures capability for open ocean operations: its limitations have been exposed in the cluttered signal environments of post-Cold War littoral scenarios.rnWith this in mind, in 2003, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems was appointed lead systems integrator for the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP), which is intended to build on the SLQ-32 via an evolutionary open source spiral-block upgrade.
