Almost since the advent of radio, the world's navies have embraced what is now termed electronic warfare (EW) as an aid to the prosecution of war fighting at sea. Starting during the First WorldWar, the UK's Royal Navy (RN) successfully used high frequency (HF - 3 to 30 MHz) direction-finders to locate Germany's High Seas Fleet units, while the SecondWorld War saw the German Luftwaffe use guided weapons to damage and/ or sink a modest number of surface ships, most notably the Italian battleship Roma. The emergence of the Fritz-X and Hs-293 weapons resulted in the first ship-based radio frequency (RF) jamming systems in an attempt to break the control link between the missile and its launch aircraft.
