A competition to supply optronic masts for later Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) is set to shape the future of periscope and optronic mast supply and support across the UK Royal Navy's submarine fleet. As well as providing non-hull-penetrating visual systems in Astute boat 4 and its succcessors, the tender activity includes options for a wider programme under which Trafalgar-class and Vanguard-class boats would be retrofitted with optronic systems in place of existing periscopes. BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, the prime contractor on the Astute programme, instigated the competition in 2007 as part of a wider Astute 'Design for Cost Reduction' initiative.
