The Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation (NDLO) has launched an international competition to upgrade or replace the country's inventory of Sting Ray Mod 0 lightweight torpedoes. Three industry teams - BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte), the Franco-Italian Euro-torp consortium (comprising DCNS, Thales and Whitehead Alenia Siste-mi Subacquei) and a joint US Navy (USN)/Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems team - attended a Project 6401 bidders' conference hosted by the NDLO in June. The would-be suppliers have until 15 September to return their technical and commercial proposals, the NDLO will downselect two of them in October for parallel contract negotiations, and contract award is timetabled for December. The programme is valued at NOK1.64 billion (USD320 million) and the first of the new torpedoes is required to enter service in 2010. The legacy Sting Ray Mod 0 torpedo, supplied by what is now BAE Systems Insyte, equips Royal Norwegian Navy Oslo-class frigates, the new Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates and Royal Norwegian Air Force P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPAs). The Norwegian warstock is maintained at the UK's Defence Munitions depot near Portsmouth.
