Although a number of European surface combatants have radars, combat management systems and data-links that give them the potential to participate in BMD engagements, there is currently no European-manufactured ship-based interceptor capable of tackling the ballistic missile threat. This situation could change in the next decade, however, subject to political backing and funding, as new versions of the Aster 30 missile become available. MBDA and Thales' EUROSAM joint venture has developed a version of the SAMP-T ground-based surface-to-air missile system with a basic anti-tactical ballistic missile capability in response to French and Italian requirements.
