In May 2016 the 101 m oil product tanker Hai Soon 12 was reported missing in the Karimata Strait, off Borneo Island, with 21 people onboard. The vessel had been travelling from Singapore to Dumai in Indonesia with 200,000 litres of marine gas oil. Suspected pirates had switched off the primary AIS on the ship, but through knowledge gained from shipping industry players, personnel at the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN's) Information Fusion Centre (IFC) knew there was a secondary tracker on board the ship.
