Having recently bolstered its Columbiaclass nuclear-powered ballisticmissile submarine (SSBN) programme with bureaucratic muscle by establishing a programme executive office (PEO) and then naming a seasoned submarine officer - Rear Admiral Scott Pappano - as PEO commander, the US Navy (USN) is now stepping up other efforts to keep the Ohio-class fleet replacement boats on track. The service is currently busy with plans to block buy some of the submarines, finishing design-software development, and preparing for the programme's critical design review, which is scheduled for April 2020.
