The loss of the Argentine Santa Cruz (TR 1700)-class submarine ARA San Juan (S 41) and its 44 crew in November 2017 has put the issue of submarine escape and rescue higher up the agenda of navies across South America. While the circumstances surrounding San Juan's loss meant that the incident was ultimately non-survivable, the preponderance of ageing diesel-electric submarines in the region has given cause for thought as to the assets available to effect a rescue operation in the event that another boat finds itself in distress.
