On February 21, 2010, JR Hokkaido announced the public debut of "Train-on-Train" test vehicles, Shinkansen freight cars on which a conventional freight train is loaded. They have been designed assuming that they are used in the Seikan Tunnel where Sinkansen and conventional trains share the rail tracks. This system allows trains to run up to 200 km/h, eliminating anxieties when they pass each other in the tunnel and ensuring an adequate freight transport capacity as well.rnThe Hokkaido Shinkansen, which is expected to inaugurate in FY 2015, is going to share the rail tracks with conventional line in the Seikan Tunnel. Because of these circumstances, the number of low-speed freight trains is a subject of certain restrictions together with the paticular concern on the influence of wind pressure at passing each other in the tunnel.
