FROM FISHING BOAT TO FRIGATES: THE EVOLUTION OF A MULTI-MISSION MARITIME UAS

In 2001 Insitu completed the SeaScan Unmanned Aerial System prototype for the commercial fishing industry. This commercial customer required a small unmanned air vehicle for assistance in the identification and tracking of tuna schools. Key capability requirements were the ability to be launched and recovered at sea from a small fishing vessel, long range operations and a suitable payload capacity for sensors and necessary data links. The environmental challenges presented during maritime operations on a small fishing vessel demanded a high degree of engineering innovation and a requirement to continuously evolve the system to meet the needs of the commercial customer. This initial work undertaken during the development of the SeaScan underpinned the design and development of the ScanEagle and the larger Integrator UAS. This paper will cover some of the unique challenges presented to the Insitu design team and how these challenges were overcome to create the current generation of Insitu UAS that have now flown in excess of 650,000 combat hours and have been deployed on over 30 classes of maritime vessels across five western navies.
