摘要

The newly evolved paradigm 'lean' which is primarily based on the concepts of elimination of waste (non value added activities), 'respond to change' and 'continuous improvement' has significant impact on the design and manufacture of aircraft parts. The concepts and principles of lean are prevalent in various CAD/CAM methods practiced in aircraft industry. Concurrent engineering, sharing of common data base, design in context, integrated parts design, precision assembly, weight control etc. are a few of the lean parameters realized using CAD/CAM technologies. Automation in sheet metal manufacturing (automated flat pattern development, nesting for minimizing the raw material wastage and CNC router program generation etc.) facilitated eliminating various non-value added activities like raw material wastage, tooling, post formed trimming operations etc. This paper brings out the lean benefits of CAD/CAM technologies for the design of aircraft parts illustrating through a case study of aircraft sheet metal parts assembly.
