Imagine you are a product safety inspector for a pharmaceutical company in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and you need to travel to Shanghai to ensure that the labeling plant is being properly maintained and report back to your U.S. superiors. You will end up paying in excess of $2,000 for a round-trip, economy class airline ticket and a small bag of nuts; and, if you are lucky, the airline might also offer a soda. It is likely that your flight will have to stop at least once before arriving in China, probably in Chicago, Newark, or San Francisco, depending on your very limited choice of airline.
