Unsteady transonic flows are important for the understanding of maneuvering and accelerating flight near the speed of sound. In this paper asymptotic methods are used to develop the approximate unsteady transonic small disturbance formulation. The particular problem of a suddenly deflected two-dimensional wedge is investigated. Numerical calculations are shown giving the development of shock patterns and the approach to steady state for an exactly sonic flow. Other applications of these equations and methods are discussed briefly.
