A Multidimensional Rasch Analysis of the Preschool Instructional Leadership Survey

The Preschool Instructional Leadership Survey (PILS) was designed to measure the frequency in which early childhood education leaders carry out instructional leadership behaviors to the teachers in their schools. The PILS was hypothesized to measure three dimensions: Instructional Guidance, Professional Capacity, and Effective Leadership. A multidimensional Rasch analysis was performed and compared against the unidimensional Rasch model. Results show that the multidimensional model provided better data-model fit. Subsequent unidimensional analyses were performed for each dimension to further assess the psychometric properties of the PILS. Additionally, analysis of the rating scale properties showed that the five-point rating structure was not suitable for the items and the categories may need to be redefined for future administration.
