The Introductory Architecture Studio Revisited: Exploring the Educational Potential of Design-Build Within a Liberal Arts Context

These projects suggest that it is both feasible and of educational value to engage in full-scale design-build exercises of limited size and scope within an introductory architecture course at a liberal arts college. These low-cost, short-timeline projects offer many of the same learning outcomes as more intensive traditional design-build projects. The different scales of the projects described here, with associated variations in budget, timelines, and client interaction, should allow comparison for purposes of considering and choosing an appropriate approach at a liberal arts institution. For administrators who may be anxious about design-build projects due to potential liability issues and cost, versions that offer similar educational experiences to large design-build projects but with less investment and complications can be seen as an attractive alternative. Minimal time or funding should not be seen as hindrances to the goal of having students design and build at full scale.
