摘要

The search for low-tech methods to alleviate current food crises due to desertification and crop failure, especially in developing countries, has led to renewed interest in how past populations dealt with these issues. Several summary volumes have been published in the last decade on ancient agriculture, primarily focusing on the origins and/or spread of plant domestication (e.g. Bellwood, 2005; Colledge and Conolly, 2007; Denham and White, 2007; Denham et al., 2007; Minnis, 2003; Neumann et al., 2003; Zeder et al., 2006; Zohary and Hopf, 2000) but no anthologies center on arid regions. In this Special Issue of the Journal of Arid Environments we focus on the development and practice of ancient agriculture in the drylands of the Middle East, from its inception in the Neolithic period, some 10,000 years ago, up to the Medieval period. The papers offer insights into the complex network of inter relationships that existed in the past to create and maintain sustainable agriculture in this region.
