摘要

In the introduction, Art Silverblatt says, "a genre acts as a portal through which the audience typically receives media messages. Each genre presents a consistent worldview that shapes the ways we think about our world" (p. 3). This statement speaks to Silverblatt's specific approach to genre studies: to use media literacy concepts and fundamentals to analyze the characteristics of specific genres. Silverblatt is less concerned with the identification of genres, or categorizing genres, and more concerned with what effects the characteristics of specific genres have on the worldview of television viewers. Although Cenre Studies does focus mostly on television and film genres, there are mentions of other media. Media literacy fundamentals are still taking shape as an educational force, and Silverblatt contributes to the area by providing another tool with which to analyze media sources. Genre Studies begins by explaining what factors are considered when categorizing media programs into specific genres. Rather than list the characteristics of those genres, Silverblatt discusses the process of media message production, and how the functions of messages, means of production, and audience considerations are similar within a specific genre.
