摘要

Despite their significance to television programming, neither Table Talk nor Helen Sioussat are well known in broadcasting history. This article reveals that Table Talk was the first talk show developed for television during the medium's first year of commercial broadcasting. The structure and content of the program were so effective they were repeated in subsequent talk shows developed by CBS and NBC. Characteristics later identified as key to the talk show format were first introduced in Table Talk by Helen Sioussat, CBS's energetic and perceptive Director of Talks and the first female executive at the network.
