This paper offers a light-hearted look at how surveying technology has improved over the years and explores the risks and rewards for those who adopted early and the pitfalls for those who stood by and watched others prosper. The author is an advocate and fan of exploiting infraredcameras to survey buildings — negating the need for destructive testing and adding a degree of impartiality to the market. Rather than focusing on one technology in particular, the paper introduces some general concepts and challenges, offering a viewpoint of the relevant issues fromboth sides of the fence.
