摘要

The Northeastern counties of South Carolina, known as the Pee Dee Region, are characterized by persistently high rural unemployment, relatively small farms, low education levels, and moderate transportation systems. This paper identifies some potential avenues of rural entrepreneurship for converting underutilized agricultural land in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina to more productive uses. A number of rural entrepreneurship alternatives, such as switchgrass conversion to bioenergy and Muscadine grapes, are explored. In order to do so, factor inputs for the region are described and costs, both fixed and variable, are identified as they apply to the Pee Dee region.
