In recent times, there has been a wave of interest in sustainability by senior managers and interested organizational stakeholders. There is a growing awareness and acceptance in society and in the business community of the need to create sustainable and sustaining organizations (Unruh and Ettenson, 2010). Signs of this are readily discernible in the increasing role being accorded to sustainability in conference agendas and in the exponential increase in publications on sustainability, including new journals devoted to the subject. The trend is also evident in new specialist business school courses in sustainability and an increasing emphasis on sustainability across the range of traditional courses throughout schools and universities. There are widespread business initiatives, emerging political debates and controversial government legislation in a range of areas related to sustainability such as carbon emissions, water allocation and alternate energy technologies, as well as in non-technological areas such as corporate governance, occupational health and safety and equal opportunity.
