Movies are products pushed to an extreme. We pay for them and expect them to deliver great experiences. Unlike other products, a movie's only "job" is to provide a great experience. The relationship between people's experience of the "final product" and the gross box office sales is as direct as it gets. A blog in 2005 (Linderman, 2005) suggested that the true hallmark of a great movie is that the box office sales for the movie climb the charts over time. A movie that has the highest opening week box office sales does not correspond to a great movie. Advertising and promotions may get people to the theater for the opener, but a quality movie ("good customer experience") will generate buzz ("recommendations") that creates continued growth in sales. A year later, both movies may have grossed the same amount, but viewers will probably warmly remember and talk to others about the quality movie, and may never give a second thought to the one-week box office wonder. The great movie has benefited the company and is valued by the customer. The other movie, the "one-week wonder", has primarily benefited the company. The author believes this measure of "greatness" applies to innovation. Great products resulting from great innovations have sales trends that move upwards over time. Customers appreciate the great product as they use it in their daily lives and become the source of buzz about the great product in the near term, and over time become loyal to the product. Like great movies, great products are memorable. So in the business world, "great innovations" benefit both company and customers.
